John A. Lande is
an artist whose work fits the broad classification of Abstract art
with individual pieces rooted in such specific categories as Action
painting, Op art, and Color Field painting. The art is in applied
mixed media, mostly as pigment on paper. Juxtaposition color and texture
drive the explorative technique. The resulting effect is a balance
between optic stimulation and mesmerization, an eclectic look at state
of flux.

Abstract Art
|
emphasized spontaneous personal
expression, freedom from accepted artistic values, surface qualities
of paint, and the act of painting itself. The object is to express
the inner feelings of the artist toward the subject or the surface
that the painting is on. It is as much an emotional release for
the artist as it is anything else.

|
Action Painting
|
energetically applied painting,
involving movements of the whole body -- or at least of its larger
limbs, as opposed to minute movements of the fingers and wrist --
and a certain indifference to traditional niceties of execution,
like the avoidance of drips and spatters.

|
Op Art
|
* concern with optics that is the
physical and psychological
process of vision.
* overly cerebral and systematic
* optical illusions
* representational / non-representational

Color Field
|
no spattering, no dribbling, betrays
the painter's "action", the forces that give rise to these shapes
seems to be the same kind as those governing the cloud formations
in wind-swept sky and the pattern of veins in a leaf.
